One of the things I like about living here in Mishima is how it feels urban and somewhat rural at the same time. The city is bustling with activity, especially near the train station and at izakayas at night, but it’s not as crowded as Tokyo. The rice fields, mountains, and the Izuhakone Railway Sunzu Line that runs through the city give this city its countryside atmosphere.

The sights here are quite enjoyable as well. During the fall, the golden foliage line both sides of the sidewalk on the way to the old campus building. On days when the weather is clear, you can see Mt. Fuji in the distance from the cafeteria of the Mishima Station North Exit building. Whenever I see Mt. Fuji, I feel lucky to be able to see such a sight as it is often hidden among the clouds even on sunny days.

The students in the Buddy Program and the staff of the CIELD office are very friendly and they ensure that your transition to life here in Mishima is smooth. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact them. Everyone does their best to help you resolve any issues you may have.

The Buddy Program holds weekly events and is a great opportunity for you to get to know some of the students at Nihon University and have fun with them. Some of the most memorable moments I had with the Buddy Program were the cooking party they held and the Fuosai Festival that took place at the end of October. At the cooking party, with the help of the Buddy students, the other exchange students and I each made a dish from our respective countries and shared them with everyone that night. If you come here during the fall, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the school’s Fuosai Festival as both a participant through the Buddy Program and as a visitor. It’s a time when the students showcase the effort they put into their food stalls, attractions, and performances and for visitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

I highly recommend you to take advantage of the time and opportunities you have here. If you’re interested in an event or want to try something new, take that chance; you might not be able to have that experience again in the future. Before you know it, your time here will come to an end so appreciate the time that you’re here, make connections, and do the things you want to do!
